Reducing your bills
Although we’re all seeing our energy bills rise, there are still simple things that you can do, which will help to lower the impact.
Your heating bills
- Lower your thermostat – lowering by just one degree could save you up to £60 a year.
- Turn your heating off when you don't need it.
- Use the thermostats on your radiators to control the heat in each room rather than having them on full all the time.
- Don’t block the heat from your radiator with bulky furniture, pull it away from the radiator so the heat can circulate.
- Don't cover your radiators with wet washing to dry. Not only might it cause condensation, it will also block the heat from circulating.
- Close your curtains at night to help keep the warmth in.
Your electricity bills
- If you have an immersion heater, don't leave it on for long periods - 30 mins max at one time should be enough.
- Switch off lights and appliances you’re not using – and don’t leave things like TVs on standby.
- Use your washing machine on a 30-degree cycle and only use it when you have a full load.
- Spend less time in the shower – or don’t fill your bath so full.
- If you’re boiling a kettle, just boil the amount of water you need
- Unplug your chargers – when your device is fully charged, unplug it.
- Use energy saving lightbulbs where possible.
- Use your microwave more – it’s quicker than your oven or stove so uses less energy.
- Consider a slow-cooker – they’re one of the most energy efficient kitchen appliances.
