Tracey's electrician apprenticeship story

Nottingham City Council is one of 25,000 businesses in the East Midlands that has apprentices - and many of them are in a range of construction trades including electrical, joinery, heating, plumbing, bricklaying and plastering.

48-year-old electrician apprentice Tracey came to us through Women in Construction, and this year is one of those delivering the workshops. She says, “I was actually inspired to give an apprenticeship a go by a Women in Construction event just like the one I'm going to be delivering. At the time I went to the workshop, I was in a minimum-wage job with no progression, and I just wanted more for myself.

“During the event I spoke to women from Nottingham City Council Housing Services who were doing apprenticeships in construction and, for the first time, it felt like something I could try. I applied, got onto the course and I’m now in my final year. I’ve never looked back.

“I can’t wait to educate people about the benefits of apprenticeships. A career in construction would never have been an option for me unless I could earn while I learn. If you’re thinking of doing an apprenticeship then go for it!”
